Carla Freeman

Carla Freeman is the Goodrich C. White Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University, associated faculty in Anthropology and Latin American/Caribbean Studies, and Director of the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry. She served as Interim Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences from 2014–2020. Freeman holds an AB in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College (1983) and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Temple University (1993).

Her research focuses on gender, labor, globalization, and affect in neoliberal contexts, particularly in the Caribbean. Notable works include High Tech and High Heels in the Global Economy (2000), Entrepreneurial Selves (2014), and Global Middle Classes (2012). Her work has been supported by grants from the NSF, Wenner Gren Foundation, and Fulbright.

Freeman’s recent research explores ethnography-writing and the life of scholar-activist Peggy Antrobus. Her publications analyze neoliberalism’s impact on Caribbean middle-class identity, affective labor, and entrepreneurial selfhood. She has contributed to feminist anthropology, globalization studies, and postcolonial theory, emphasizing cultural specificity in global economic shifts.
