About
Carla Fernández Rico is a Lecturer at the Department of Materials at ETH Zurich. She specializes in soft matter physics, materials science, and biology, focusing on colloidal systems and biofabricated materials. Her research includes developing novel methods for shaping gels with precise microstructures and exploring sustainable functional materials.
Education:
- Bachelor’s in Nanoscience, Autonomous University of Barcelona
- Masters in Nanomaterials, Utrecht University
- PhD in Colloid Science (2017), Oxford Colloid Group under Prof. Roel Dullens
Research Journey:
- ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship (2021) at the Soft and Living Laboratory (Prof. Eric Dufresne)
- Ambizione Fellowship (2024) at the Complex Materials Lab (Prof. Andre Studart)
She leads an independent research team investigating biofabricated materials for sustainable applications. Outside academia, she is an accomplished athlete, competing internationally in athletics, cycling, and karate, including a World Cup win in Munich (2015).
