About
Carl R. F. Lund is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo). He has been affiliated with the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering since 1986, following a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1981) and postdoctoral work at Exxon Research Laboratories. His academic roles have included Associate Dean for Research and Department Chair.
Dr. Lund’s research focuses on heterogeneous catalysis, reaction engineering, and chemical kinetics, with recent emphasis on biomass conversion to fuels and sustainable chemical processes. Notable projects include development of chemical oxygen generators (COGs) for emergency oxygen supply, membrane reactors for water-gas shift and dry reforming of methane, and kinetic modeling of catalytic systems. His educational research explores active learning techniques, flipped classrooms, and metacognitive development through homework wrappers and problem-solving pedagogy.
His interdisciplinary work bridges catalysis fundamentals and pedagogical innovation. Key educational contributions include the AFCoKaRE flipped classroom toolkit and studies on effort-based grading. His catalysis research addresses industrial challenges like COG efficiency, membrane reactor optimization, and novel catalyst design for methane reforming.
Scientific awards include Fellow status in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. His research groups (The Lund Group) have produced numerous PhD and MS theses in catalysis and education innovation. Current projects emphasize computational modeling of catalytic systems and refining problem-solving mastery in engineering education.
