Carl Heneghan is a Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. He serves as Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM), Co-Director of the Centre on Healthcare and Urbanisation at Kellogg College, and Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine. His roles include advisory work for governments, media collaborations (e.g., BBC Panorama), and leadership in initiatives like the AllTrials campaign advocating for clinical trial transparency.
Dr. Heneghan’s education includes a DPhil, MA, BCH, and BM from Oxford, alongside an MRCGP. His research focuses on systematic reviews, regulatory science, and healthcare policy. Notable contributions include the Tamiflu systematic reviews, investigations into medical devices (e.g., surgical mesh), and analyses of coroners’ reports to improve patient safety. He has been honored as an NIHR Senior Investigator and twice named among the NHS’s top 100 clinical leaders.
His academic output spans over 350 peer-reviewed publications, with recent work addressing multimorbidity patterns, non-pharmacological interventions, and pandemic-related evidence synthesis. He leads multi-center randomized controlled trials and chairs guideline development committees for WHO and the FDA.
Dr. Heneghan’s teaching and training programs in evidence-based practice are globally recognized, and he co-organizes the annual EvidenceLive conference. His interdisciplinary collaborations bridge academia, policy, and media to promote high-quality, equitable healthcare.
