Dr. Carina Heckert is an Associate Professor of Medical Anthropology at UTEP, focusing on how policies shape health experiences for marginalized groups. Her award-winning book Birth in Times of Despair (2024) documents reproductive violence against immigrant women in US-Mexico border regions. She received the AAA Excellence in Teaching Award (2020).
Her research investigates maternal health vulnerabilities exacerbated by immigration policies, border closures, and COVID-19. Current projects include studies on vaccine hesitancy among pregnant Latinas and systemic barriers to prenatal care.
