Cara M. Thompson

Cara M. Thompson, PhD, LMFT, LMFT/S, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She serves as Field Placement Coordinator for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and holds editorial board membership at The Family Journal (ACA IAMFC).

Education:

• PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, University of South Carolina
• Master's in Clinical Counseling (Child & Family), Columbia International University

Research focuses on neurobiological impacts of early trauma, stress response adaptations in relationships, trauma-informed education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Clinical specialties include PTSD, mood disorders, ADHD, and parent-child dynamics with experience in community mental health and school-based systems. Her work addresses discipline disparities and crisis response in educational settings.
