Research Interests
Professor Colvin's practice-based research centers on constructed photography, creating intricate visual illusions and allegories that explore contemporary concerns relating to society, the environment, and aspects of national identity. His work begins as large-scale studio 'stage-sets', tableaux of everyday objects carefully posed and theatrically lit, with painted trompe-l'oeil elements that integrate object and subject in complex mise en scene.
His research investigates how visual narratives can engage viewers in creative dialogue about cultural identity, particularly Scottish identity, while incorporating historical references and contemporary social commentary. Through his unique photographic technique, Colvin bridges traditional and contemporary art forms, creating works that challenge perceptions and invite interpretation.
Research Trends
Colvin's recent work demonstrates a consistent focus on Scottish cultural identity, historical interpretation, and visual allegory. His projects often reinterpret historical figures and events through contemporary photographic practice, with recent works examining Robert Burns, Jacobite history, and national symbolism. The artist frequently engages with themes of heritage, memory, and cultural representation through constructed photographic environments that blend reality with illusion.
