Caitlin Ellis

Caitlin Ellis is Associate Professor of History at the University of Oslo's Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History. Her research focuses on medieval Scandinavia, Britain, Ireland and the North Atlantic, examining cross-cultural relations and maritime networks through textual and material evidence.

Research interests include identity formation, religious change, trading connections, and expressions of power during the Viking and Norman periods. Current projects analyze London's political landscape (c.1640-1700), Islamic toleration concepts, and George Keith's international intellectual networks. Methodological approaches combine historical analysis with literary studies.

Recent publications explore Norse-French linguistic interactions, Scandinavian naval expeditions, and ecclesiastical developments in Orkney. Awards include the Snorri Sturluson Fellowship and Magnus Magnusson Memorial Prize for contributions to Northern European studies. She leads courses on power dynamics during Viking raids, North Sea cultural encounters, and advanced historical methodology.
