About
Burges Johnson (1877–1963) was an assistant professor of English and head of Vassar College’s Bureau of Publication from 1915 to 1926. He championed student autonomy, innovative education, and college publicity. Born in Vermont, he graduated from Amherst College (B.A., 1899) and received an honorary Litt.D. from Amherst (1924). His career spanned journalism, publishing, and academia, with a focus on bridging literary creativity and educational reform.
Johnson’s research emphasized educational philosophy, the role of publicity in academia, and the importance of student initiative. His works, such as *Campus Versus Classroom* (1946) and *The Lost Art of Profanity* (1948), critiqued institutional rigidity and advocated for humor and nonsense as tools for learning. His Bureau of Publication promoted student-led media initiatives and college outreach.
His legacy includes redefining Vassar’s public image through student journalism and fostering a generation of literary graduates. Post-Vassar, he taught at Syracuse University (1926–1935) and Union College (1935–1944), continuing his advocacy for liberal arts education and creative expression.
