Associate Professor Buddha Basnyat leads the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Nepal (OUCRU-NP) hosted at Patan Hospital and Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Kathmandu, under the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Medicine. His work focuses on tropical medicine with emphasis on enteric fever, typhoid vaccines, and high altitude illness.
Research interests span High Altitude Medicine where he demonstrated low-dose Diamox efficacy for altitude sickness prevention, particularly among vulnerable pilgrim populations; Enteric Fever Treatment through landmark RCTs published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases; and Typhoid Vaccines culminating in the 2019 NEJM publication of an 81% effective conjugate vaccine trial. His team recently secured a major JGHT grant for a multi-country enteric fever treatment trial across South Asia.
