About
Bryce Speed is an Associate Professor of Art specializing in Painting at the University of Alabama, where he has taught since 2014. He holds an MFA from the University of Alabama (2005) and a BFA from the University of Mississippi (1999). Prior to his current position, he taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Central Community College in Nebraska.
His research focuses on abstract painting techniques that explore the intersection of natural topographies and the human psyche, using fluid forms and color to metaphorically represent inner experiences. Key themes include sensory perception, the relationship between nature and the mind, and the limitations of language in capturing existential interactions.
Speed has exhibited widely since 2006, with notable solo exhibitions including 'The Floating World' (Venvi Gallery, 2020) and 'The Space Between' (Cole Pratt Gallery, 2020). His work has been featured in venues across the US and internationally, including the Royal Scottish Academy (Edinburgh) and the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (Mississippi). He gained recognition for his 2020 Artnet.com-featured virtual exhibition during the pandemic.
Awardees include the 2021 Virginia Center for the Creative Arts residency fellowship and first place in the 2019 Valdosta National Exhibition. He actively contributes to academic discourse through panel chairing (e.g., SECAC 2018) and residency programs.
