About
Bryan Yazell is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Language within the Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on exploring the social dimensions of literature, particularly in relation to welfare, climate change, and migration. He holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Davis (2016).
Yazell's work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary research, emphasizing how fiction collaborates in co-developing knowledge about societal challenges. His monograph The American Vagrant in Literature: Race, Work and Welfare (2023) examines 19th-century vagrancy narratives' influence on Anglo-US cultural discourses. Current projects include using flash fiction to address climate anxiety in education and exploring post-anthropocentric narratives through participatory events like Burning Man.
His articles span climate fiction's pedagogical potential, racial narratives in migration discourse, and the intersection of AI with ecological futures. Awards include the NordIAS Visiting Fellowship (2024) and contributions to SCC PACA initiatives. He leads several EU-funded projects addressing climate action and citizen humanities, collaborating across social sciences, engineering, and environmental studies.
Teaching responsibilities include courses in American literature, cyberpunk, and research methodologies. Active in both academic and public spheres, Yazell's work appears in journals like Configurations and Humanities & Social Sciences Communications, with frequent media engagements discussing climate fiction and cultural responses to ecological crises.
