About
Bryan Gibb is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the New York Institute of Technology, actively leading the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program since 2019. He coordinates both laboratory-based phage discovery and computational genomics sections, mentoring over 200 undergraduate students in authentic research experiences.
His research focuses on bacteriophage isolation and genomic analysis, specifically utilizing Arthrobacter globiformis as a host system. Key areas include viral evolution, microbial ecology, and bioinformatics pipeline development for phage genome annotation. This work bridges fundamental virology with practical applications in antimicrobial research and genomic education.
Dr. Gibb has taught 14+ course sections across 6 academic years (2019–2025), adapting methodologies for pandemic-era remote instruction in bioinformatics. His program structure emphasizes hands-on skill development, with students progressing from phage isolation to genomic characterization. Future engagement includes the 2025 Phage Genomics Workshop (December 12–16, 2025) and 2026 SEA Symposium.
As a dedicated undergraduate research mentor, he has guided cohorts of 10–16 freshmen/sophomores per section through complete phage discovery cycles. His lab infrastructure supports both traditional microbiology workflows and computational analysis, fostering technical proficiency in emerging scientists. Collaborations include instructors like Sotiris Tsadaris, Joseph Holloway, and Leonidas Salichos for specialized pedagogical support.
