Bryan Briney

Bryan Briney, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. He leads a research program focused on multi-omics analyses of the human humoral immune response to infectious diseases such as HIV, Lassa virus, Ebola, and SARS-CoV-2. His work integrates computational immunology, antibody engineering, and systems biology approaches to advance vaccine design and therapeutic development.

Dr. Briney earned his PhD in Microbiology & Immunology from Vanderbilt University (2012) and a BS in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from UC San Diego (2007). Before joining Scripps Research as faculty in 2012 as a Postdoctoral Fellow, he transitioned to Assistant Professor (2012-2022) and currently holds the rank of Associate Professor since 2022.

His research interests span HIV vaccine development, antibody repertoire analysis, and computational methods for antibody discovery. Key areas include identifying broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs), understanding B cell lineage maturation pathways, and creating novel vaccine candidates targeting conserved viral epitopes. His lab has pioneered techniques like antigen barcoding and antibody language models to accelerate discovery processes.

Notable recent work includes identifying ultra-broad coronavirus neutralizing antibodies, developing Lassa virus vaccine candidates using structural ensembles, and demonstrating HIV gp41-targeting bNAb precursors through vaccination. His team also investigates pre-pandemic SARS-CoV-2 immunity patterns and antibody responses in pediatric elite-neutralizers.

Dr. Briney has received significant recognition including awards from the Baxter Family Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His lab maintains active collaborations in computational immunology and has contributed to high-impact platforms like the Clonify repertoire analysis tool.
