Bruce Lewenstein is a Professor of Science Communication at Cornell University, holding joint appointments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S). He was appointed Cornell’s 13th University Ombudsman in 2022, succeeding Charles Walcott. His role involves mediating disputes and promoting procedural fairness across the university community. Lewenstein has been at Cornell since 1987, following his PhD in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania.
His research focuses on public communication of science and technology, including controversial topics like biotechnology and nanotechnology. He has pioneered citizen science initiatives and emphasized equitable science education. Key roles include Chair of the Department of Science and Technology Studies (2014–2021), Board of Trustees member (2016–2020), and Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2010–2012). He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2002.
Lewenstein’s work bridges academia and public engagement, addressing how science interacts with society. His ombudsman office, based at Stimson Hall, provides confidential support to students, faculty, and staff.
