Bruce Hanington

Bruce Hanington is a Professor at the School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University. He has held leadership roles including Head of School, Director of Graduate Studies, and Program Chair of Industrial Design. His work focuses on human-centered design methods, design ethnography, participatory design, and the contextual meaning of product form.

• Teaching: Human Centered Design, Industrial Design Studio, Research Methods, Design Principles and Practices, and executive workshops on Design Thinking.
• Research: Emphasizes integrating user insights throughout the design process, with applications in appliances (GE), skincare compliance (Johnson & Johnson), and studio learning environments.

He co-authored the internationally recognized book Universal Methods of Design, published in nine languages. His publications appear in journals like Design Issues, The Design Journal, and Interactions, as well as chapters in Designing Inclusive Futures and The Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Design.
