Bruce Frayne is a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He holds a PhD in Geography from Queen's University, an MCRP in Planning from the University of Cape Town, and a BA in Geography and Sociology from the University of Natal. As Dean, he oversees academic and administrative operations of the Faculty while maintaining active research and policy engagement.
His research focuses on sustainable cities, human migration patterns, urbanization dynamics, and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa and Global South urban contexts. Specific interests include climate change adaptation, household vulnerability, supermarketization of food systems, and the intersections between urban development and SDG implementation. He currently chairs the Canadian chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN).
Teaching includes courses such as INDEV 100: Introduction to International Development and INDEV 617: Development Practice Field Course. Recent publications include co-editing Handbook on Urban Food Security in the Global South (2020) and multiple journal articles analyzing food security dimensions across cities in Mozambique, Ghana, Lesotho, and Namibia.
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to urban challenges, with ongoing research into youth migration-agriculture linkages, infrastructure impacts on food access, and localized SDG frameworks. Grants and collaborations involve international institutions and multi-city studies in Africa and Canada.
Bruce currently does not supervise graduate students due to his deanship responsibilities, but has previously advised researchers in urban development and food security. His research teams collaborate with NGOs, governments, and academic partners to address urban poverty and sustainable development priorities.
