Brodie Sakakibara is an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. He serves as a research scientist with the Chronic Disease Prevention Program and is based at the Southern Medical Program at UBC Okanagan, focusing on rehabilitation sciences for stroke and chronic disease populations.
His educational background includes a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of British Columbia (2013), postdoctoral training at Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Health Sciences and UBC's Department of Physical Therapy, and a diploma in international trade and transportation logistics from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Prior to academia, he worked in trade and transportation policy and stakeholder relations.
Dr. Sakakibara's research spans Occupational Science, Gerontology, and Rehabilitation with emphases on Stroke Rehabilitation, Chronic Disease Self-Management, Telehealth applications for cardiovascular patients, Complex Behavioural Intervention Development, and Clinical Trial Methodologies. His work integrates participatory and patient-oriented approaches to develop mobility disability interventions using contemporary measurement methods like Rasch analyses.
He actively supervises graduate students in Rehabilitation Sciences (MSc and PhD programs) and seeks interdisciplinary collaborations on research clusters and grant-funded projects. Dr. Sakakibara also expresses interest in mentoring undergraduate researchers and developing partnerships through the Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management.
