Brittany R. Gilbert

Brittany R. Gilbert is an Assistant Professor of Fine Art, Painting at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, where she teaches courses such as 2-D Design, Drawing, and Painting. She earned her M.F.A. in Painting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a B.A. in Studio Fine Arts from Union College, with minors in Art History and French.

Her artistic practice centers on observational landscape painting, using sequential and perceptual methods to explore sustained engagement with changing environments. Through repeated painting of the same location over time, she investigates human perception, sensory attunement, and the rhythm of artistic endurance. Her work emphasizes the subjective, intuitive response over mechanical documentation, allowing abstract forms and color shifts to emerge from prolonged focus.

Brittany's research interests include landscape painting, perceptual art, environmental representation, and studio-based inquiry. Her exhibitions and artistic output reflect a deep engagement with place, time, and visual transformation. She has exhibited widely in national and international juried shows and has been recognized with numerous grants and awards, including professional development grants, research stipends, and exhibition prizes.

Her notable honors include the South Carolina Arts Commission Project Support Grant, multiple awards from the Northern National Art Competition and Pickens County Museum, and fellowships such as the Four Pillars Residency. She has also received teaching and research support from Francis Marion University and the Florence Regional Arts Alliance.

Brittany actively contributes to the academic and artistic community through artist lectures, workshops, and jurying roles. She has taught at various institutions including UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T State University, and Sandhills Community College. Her recent workshops focus on acrylic painting, color theory, and printmaking. She has participated in artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center and Salem Art Works, further enriching her practice.
