Dr. Britney Murphy serves as an Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She holds office in Heritage Hall 360L and maintains regular office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Dr. Murphy earned both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, establishing a strong foundation in historical research methodologies and American studies.
Her research interests span modern U.S. history, urban history, environmental justice, and volunteerism, with particular focus on civic engagement and citizenship studies. Dr. Murphy's work critically examines the intersections of socioeconomic identities and community service programs.
As director of the internship programs for both the History and African American Studies departments, she plays a vital role in connecting academic theory with practical experience for students. Her current scholarly work centers on her book project examining VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) during the War on Poverty era.
Dr. Murphy brings valuable practical experience to her academic work as a proud AmeriCorps VISTA and NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) alumna, providing her with firsthand understanding of the community service programs she studies.
