Brijesh Mainali

Brijesh Mainali serves as Associate Professor in Energy Sustainability at the Department of Built Environment and Energy Technology, Faculty of Technology, Linnaeus University. With over 15 years of academic experience from Linnaeus University and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), he has established himself as a leading researcher in sustainable energy systems. His interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, policy, and sustainability assessment, with a particular focus on energy efficiency and climate adaptation in the built environment.

Dr. Mainali's research interests span renewable energy technologies, energy markets, policy design, behavioral dimensions, and sustainability issues. His work emphasizes systems thinking to address complex energy challenges, particularly focusing on energy efficiency and climate mitigation in buildings. He has secured over 53.8 million SEK in research funding, with 34.2 million SEK as principal applicant, working with major funding bodies including FORMAS, the Swedish Research Council, and the European Union.

His recent publication trends reveal a strong focus on sustainable housing solutions, particularly energy renovation of detached houses, climate-smart adaptations, and circular economy approaches. The research consistently addresses the intersection of technical solutions with behavioral and policy dimensions, emphasizing practical implementation pathways for sustainable development.

Dr. Mainali has served as main supervisor for two PhD students and co-supervisor for four others, while supervising over 20 MSc theses. His expertise is recognized through roles as a review panel member for the Research Council of Norway and evaluator for Horizon Europe energy calls.

He leads several significant research initiatives including the Doctoral school in Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEED), the Bio-based circular recovery model, Circular Trust Building project, Climate Smart Renovation model, and multiple projects addressing energy renovation of Swedish detached houses. His work with the Bioresource Technology research group and the Sustainable Built Environment Research center demonstrates his commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration for sustainable solutions.
