Associate Professor Brigitte Truschnegg holds a position at the University of Innsbruck’s Institute of Ancient History and Ancient Near Eastern Studies since 2012. She also serves as Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences since March 2021. Her roles include leadership in the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein 1857 (President since 2013) and the Redaktionsteam of ausgegraben.at (since 2022).
Education: She earned a diploma in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology from Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck (1993), and a doctorate in Systematic History of Science for the Study of the Roman Past in Vorarlberg (1999). Her habilitation monograph on ancient cities and spatial perception in Greek and Roman literature is pending publication.
Research focuses on ancient cities, gender studies in classical contexts, historiography of the Roman Alpine region (Raetia), and Vorarlberg regional history. Collaborations include the Center for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies Innsbruck (CGI), the Cultural Encounters research focus, and the Ancient Worlds Studies and Archaeologies (AWOSA) center. Notable projects involve Sparkling Science initiatives and databases like FRuGAE on gender aspects in ancient ethnography.
Scientific awards include the Maria Ducia Women's Research Prize and Dr. Otto Seibert Science Promotion Prize. She contributes to academic juries, including the Austrian State Prize for Historical Sciences and the University of Innsbruck’s Digitalization Research Prize.
Her teaching spans women's and gender history at universities in Innsbruck, Graz, and Salzburg (2001–2009). She has organized international courses on Alexander the Great, ancient cities, and gender history in collaboration with institutions in Helsinki, Wroclaw, Marburg, and others. Grants include FWF projects on gender roles in ancient ethnography and ongoing editorial work.
Labs/teams: Active in interdisciplinary platforms such as CGI and AWOSA, contributing to museum-related research and digital humanities projects. Her editorial work includes co-editing the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein Jahrbuch series and co-authoring books on Alpine and Roman history.
