Brian T. Bateman

Brian T. Bateman is the Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University. He holds a courtesy appointment in Epidemiology and Population Health. Trained at Columbia University (MD), Harvard (MSc in Epidemiology), and Massachusetts General Hospital (Anesthesiology residency), his work focuses on medication safety in pregnancy and maternal morbidity. He pioneered large-scale epidemiological analyses of healthcare data, with over 300 publications in top journals like NEJM and JAMA. His research has influenced FDA and EMA labeling changes and shaped clinical guidelines.

Education: MD from Columbia University, MSc in Epidemiology from Harvard. Board-certified in Anesthesiology. Former roles include Vice Chair for Faculty Development at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and leadership in the Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology.
