Brian Mcelwee

Brian Mcelwee is a Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Southampton, serving as Director of the Southampton Ethics Centre and Director of the British Society of Ethical Theory. He holds a prominent role in advancing ethical theory through research and academic leadership.

Education: He studied at the Universities of Glasgow and St Andrews, and taught at the Universities of Oxford, Warwick, and St Andrews before joining the University of Southampton in 2016.

Research interests include Normative Ethics, Applied Ethics (with a focus on global poverty), Metaethics, the history of moral philosophy (particularly John Stuart Mill), and aesthetic normativity. Current projects explore the demandingness of morality, supererogation, blame alternatives, and aesthetic normativity.

Publications span journals like The Journal of Moral Philosophy and Australasian Journal of Philosophy, addressing topics such as moral blame, scalar consequentialism, and non-moral analogues of supererogation. His work often bridges theoretical ethics and practical applications.

He currently supervises PhD student Adam Meylan-Stevenson in Politics. Mcelwee actively engages in academic leadership roles, directing research centers and editorial contributions to ethical theory journals.
