Brian Goldstein

Brian Goldstein is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Art History at Swarthmore College. His research focuses on the intersection of architecture, urban history, and race in the American built environment, with a particular emphasis on modern architecture, urban renewal, and liberation movements.

Goldstein’s work examines how architecture and urban planning reflect and shape social dynamics, including race, power, and economic inequality. He explores topics such as postwar urban redevelopment, the role of design in civil rights movements, and the legacy of African American architects.

His recent publications highlight themes like postwar Los Angeles photography in urban analysis, Harlem gentrification, and the political dimensions of modernist architecture. His upcoming book on J. Max Bond, Jr. will further expand these narratives.

Goldstein teaches courses including Art and Architecture of Liberation, Global History of Architecture, and Modern Architecture & Urbanism, emphasizing critical perspectives on design and its societal impacts.
