Brian Goldfarb is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He holds a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester (1998). His research focuses on contemporary visual and digital culture, disability studies, and education. Goldfarb’s work examines how media technologies shape pedagogical models across arts, education, and postcolonial politics, with a recent emphasis on environmental activism and digital communication since the late 20th century.
Goldfarb’s creative projects include Global Tourette, a digital documentary exploring cultural responses to Tourette Syndrome, and Seeing Our Stories, a refugee community-driven narrative therapy project. He previously served as Curator of Education at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in NYC, organizing exhibitions and directing educational programs. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses, including Media, Technology and [Dis]ability and Cultures of Care.
His publications include the book Visual Pedagogy: Media Cultures in and beyond the Classroom (Duke University Press, 2002) and articles on disability pedagogies, environmental knowledge, and media activism. Goldfarb’s curatorial projects, such as alt.youth.media and Senses of Care, highlight intersections between technology, care, and interdependence.
