About
Brian Gilchrist is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering. He serves as Director of SPRL/XTRM Labs and leads the Space Electrodynamics and Tether Systems research group.
His educational qualifications include:
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, 1991, Stanford University
- M.S. in Electrical Engineering, 1979, University of Illinois, Urbana
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, 1977, University of Illinois, Urbana
His research centers on plasma electrodynamics with emphasis on space electrodynamic tethered systems, electric propulsion applications, and electron/ion beam effects including cold-cathode field emission cathodes and relativistic beams. He develops advanced plasma diagnostics techniques such as microwave/millimeter wave interferometers, Langmuir Probes, and floating potential monitors while advancing spacecraft technology and radiowave propagation systems for space communication.
He maintains critical lab affiliations including the Radiation Laboratory (EECS), Space Physics Research Laboratory / XTRM LABS, Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Lab (Aerospace), and the Multidisciplinary Design Program.
