Brian Gettler

Brian Gettler is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and a member of the Montreal History Group. He serves as Co-Editor of the Canadian Historical Review and focuses his research on the political, economic, and social history of colonialism in Quebec and Canada.

His work examines colonialism through lenses of money, capitalism, and state-indigenous fiscal relations. His 2020 book Colonialism's Currency analyzes monetary tools in British/Canadian Indian policy and fur trade corporate practices. Recent research explores 19th-20th century Crown-First Nations financial interactions.

Key publications span Indigenous economic practices in Quebec (2023), democratic colonialism in Canada (2021), and TRC historical research (2017). His 2012 article in Revue d'histoire de l'Amérique française won the Histoire sociale/Social History Best Article Prize.
