Brian Daniel Joseph is a Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and The Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics at The Ohio State University. He has held these positions since 2003 and 1997 respectively, after progressing through academic ranks from Assistant Professor (1979-1985) to Associate Professor (1985-1988) and eventually Professor (1988-present).

His research focuses on historical linguistics, particularly the evolution of the Greek language across Ancient to Modern periods, analyzed through its Indo-European genealogical context and Balkan geographic context. He has extensively studied language change, Balkan linguistics, and Indo-European linguistic relationships.
Joseph has received numerous honors, including fellowships from AAAS, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Linguistic Society of America, alongside honorary doctorates from La Trobe University (2006) and University of Patras (2008).
