Brian Burgoon

Brian Burgoon is Professor of International and Comparative Political Economy at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Academic Director of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR). He received his PhD from MIT in 1998 and has taught at the University of Amsterdam since 2001.

Professor Burgoon's research focuses on the complex relationship between global economic integration and domestic policy choices, particularly regarding social protection systems and labor market regulations. His work examines how international economic forces interact with domestic political institutions and public opinion across different national contexts, with significant attention to both European and Asian political economies.

His scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with the political economy of globalization, particularly evident in his award-winning collaborative research on Asian public attitudes toward unemployment spending. This work reveals nuanced citizen perspectives that challenge conventional wisdom about globalization's impact on social policy preferences.

As Academic Director of AISSR, Professor Burgoon oversees a major interdisciplinary research institute within the University of Amsterdam. His leadership role involves shaping research agendas, facilitating scholarly collaborations, and representing the institute externally. His office is located at New Achtergracht 166, room B8.05, where he conducts his research and administrative duties.

Professor Burgoon maintains an active research program through the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, collaborating with scholars like Assistant Professor Sijeong Lim on projects examining globalization's impact on social policy formation in developing and newly industrialized countries.
