Professor Brian Bigger holds the Chair in Cell and Gene Therapy at the University of Manchester, where he directs the Stem Cell & Neurotherapies Laboratory. He serves as Head of Business Engagement in the School of Biological Sciences and chairs the European Study Group on Lysosomal Diseases.
Research Programs:
- MPS lysosomal disease group: Developing stem cell/gene therapies for neurodegenerative disorders
- Brain tumor group: Investigating tumor-microglia interactions and drug screening
His laboratory has pioneered clinical trials for Sanfilippo syndrome and Hunter syndrome using hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy. Research spans biomarker development, neuropathology characterization, and GMP-compliant therapeutic cell manufacturing.
