Bret Gustafson is Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis, focusing on climate politics, fossil fuels, and Indigenous movements in Latin America. His award-winning book Bolivia in the Age of Gas (2020) analyzes natural gas politics during Evo Morales' presidency, winning the LASA Bryce Wood Book Award. He collaborates with Bolivia's Guarani people on language revitalization and territorial rights.
Gustafson's research spans energy transitions, extractivism, and decolonial futures. He directs graduate research on extractivism and social movements in the Andes and Amazon. Current projects include Guarani language histories and historical anthropology of U.S. energy politics.
