Brendan Mathews is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Literature at Bard College at Simon's Rock, where he has taught since 2007. He also serves as Dean of Faculty and Curricular Development. Holding an MFA from the University of Virginia and a BA (Highest Honors, Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was a Fulbright U.S. Scholar in Ireland (2014) and has authored two acclaimed novels: The World of Tomorrow (Little, Brown & Co., 2017) and This Is Not a Love Song (Little, Brown & Co.).
- Research Interests: 20th century Ireland, 1930s New York City, photography, film, and creative writing pedagogy.
- Teaching Interests: Creative writing workshops, literature and national identity, adaptation, graphic novels, and the short story form.
His publications in Best American Short Stories (2010, 2014), Virginia Quarterly Review, and other venues reflect his focus on experimental narratives and historical intersections. Awards include grants from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Sewanee Writers Conference.
