Bram G Sengers

Dr. Bram G. Sengers is an Associate Professor in Bioengineering at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment and the Bioengineering Group. He specializes in computational modeling of complex biological systems, particularly placental nutrient/drug transfer and tissue regeneration strategies for bone/cartilage repair. His work integrates engineering methods with biological experiments, collaborating closely with medical and experimental groups.

Education: MSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (2000), PhD in Computational Modelling for Cartilage Tissue Engineering (2005). Joined Southampton in 2009 after postdoctoral research in bone repair. Active in research groups including the Bioengineering Group, Institute for Life Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Musculoskeletal Health Centre.

Research focuses on placental transport kinetics, biomaterial-cell interactions, and computational modeling of biological systems. Techniques include placental perfusion experiments, finite element methods, microscopy, and micro-CT analysis. Notable achievements include a 2018 award for vascular network analysis in bone disease and supervision of multiple PhD students.

Current projects include placental villi evolution studies (BBSRC-funded), hydrogel mechanosensing, and placental drug transport modeling (EPSRC-funded). Collaborates with international researchers and publishes in journals like Biology Letters, Journal of the Royal Society Interface, and Evolution.
