About
Bora Ung is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal. He holds a B.Ing. and M.Sc. from Université Laval and a Ph.D. from Polytechnique Montréal. His research is conducted through the LACIME (Communications and Microelectronic Integration Laboratory) and Q-ÉTS Quantum research groups.
His research spans three primary axes: Sensors, Networks and Connectivity; Health Technologies; and Quantum Engineering. His specific expertise includes optics-photonics, photonic devices, optical communications, microstructured and doped optical fibers, terahertz waveguides, and multifunctional fibers. He has developed novel optical fibers for guiding cylindrical vector beams and vortex light, with applications in biomedical sensing, malaria detection, and quantum communication.
His publication trends show a clear progression from fundamental fiber optics research toward increasingly applied biomedical and quantum applications. Recent work focuses on PDMS-based optical waveguides for pressure sensing, magneto-optical malaria detection, quantum cryptography with structured photons, and optical devices for spinal cord injury diagnosis.
Professor Ung actively supervises numerous graduate students working on projects including intelligent biomedical equipment for pressure ulcer prevention, malaria detection using magneto-optical methods, quantum key distribution, and smart concrete with integrated optical fibers.
He is deeply involved with the LACIME laboratory, which focuses on six areas from functional materials to communication protocols, and the Q-ÉTS Quantum research group advancing quantum technologies at ÉTS.
