About
Dr. Bonnie Hallman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba's Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. Her research examines how families interact with everyday spaces through dual focuses: caregiving for aging relatives and family leisure experiences in designed environments.
Hallman's current work explores 'blue spaces' (open skies and water environments) and their therapeutic impacts on mental health. She maintains additional research interest in pedagogical approaches to support first-year university transitions.
Key research domains:
- Geographies of care and aging
- Therapeutic landscape theory
- Family photography as spatial practice
- Zoos as cultural landscapes
Publications demonstrate longitudinal focus on:
- Gendered caregiving patterns
- Intergenerational family dynamics
- Emotional dimensions of space
- Place attachment
Notable contributions include editing the volume Family Geographies: The Spatiality of Families and Family Life (Oxford University Press), which synthesizes spatial approaches to family studies.
