About
Björn Holger Heyn is a Researcher at the University of Oslo's Centre for Planetary Habitability. His work focuses on geodynamics, mantle convection, and numerical modeling of Earth's internal dynamics. He specializes in plume dynamics, core-mantle boundary processes, and thermochemical heterogeneities.
Research Interests: Heyn investigates Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs), plume formation, plume-lithosphere interactions, and core-mantle boundary topography. He uses the finite element code ASPECT to simulate mantle processes, addressing questions about mantle flow and plume origins.
- LLSVP Dynamics: Origin and evolution of lower mantle heterogeneities
- Plume Formation: Role of subduction and LLSVPs in plume periodicity
- Plume-Lithosphere Interaction: Impact on surface heat flux and lithosphere thickness
Teaching: Guest lecturer for Arctic Tectonics and Planetary Physics courses at UNIS and the University of Oslo.
Key Projects: MAGPIE (Greenland geodynamics) and ESA-funded 3D Earth - Greenland studies. His work has been featured in Nature Reviews Earth and Environment and forskning.no.
