About
Prof. Birgit Frank is Professor for Design and Residential Construction at the Peter Behrens School of Arts, Hochschule Düsseldorf since 2016. She is an accomplished architect with extensive experience in residential architecture and urban development.
Her educational background includes architecture studies at the University of Dortmund and Politecnico di Milano (1986-1993), where she graduated with distinction and received the University of Dortmund prize.
Prof. Frank's research focuses on how residential buildings reflect societal conditions, with emphasis on developing new housing typologies for rapidly growing cities. She investigates the critical relationship between housing, public space, and social integration, arguing that privatization-driven development leads to societal segregation. Her current research initiative 'Zukunft Stadt Wohnen' (Future City Living) addresses the need for spatial structures that accommodate increasingly individualized European societies.
Her notable achievements include:
- Villa Massimo scholarship in Rome (2012)
- Villa Massimo scholarship at Casa Baldi, Olevano (2010)
- Prize of the University of Dortmund
Prof. Frank has held significant positions including board member of BDA Berlin (2009-2015), guest professor at Hamburg University of Fine Arts (2005-2006), and partner at Architekten Krischanitz und Frank ZT GmbH (2004-2007). She maintains her own architectural practice (Birgit Frank Studio) since 2008 and has won international architecture competitions in partnership with Adolf Krischanitz.
