Prof. Dr. Birgit Engel is a retired Professor of Art Didactics and Aesthetic Education from the Münster University of Fine Arts (2011–2022). She specialized in phenomenological-hermeneutic approaches to artistic and aesthetic educational processes, emphasizing the role of sensory experience in pedagogy. Her work bridges university, school, and cultural education through practice-based research. Since 2015, she has organized international research colloquia focusing on young scholars and established academics in art education.
Engel’s career included teaching at secondary schools and leadership roles in aesthetic education programs. Her doctoral dissertation Spürbare Bildung explored the role of aesthetics in teaching. She held roles such as Chair of the PhD Committee at the Münster University of Fine Arts and editor of the Didaktische Logiken des Unbestimmten series.
