Bill Rankin is Associate Professor of the History of Science and Chair of the History of Science and Medicine Program at Yale. His research examines the relationship between science and space across scales, from global territory to architectural design.
Publications include the award-winning 'After the Map: Cartography, Navigation, and the Transformation of Territory in the Twentieth Century' (2016), which analyzes how mapping technologies shaped geopolitical power structures. Current projects explore the environmental sciences since 1960 and theories of visual communication.
Honors and awards recognize contributions to historical geography and technological studies, including the Sidney Edelstein Prize and SSHA President’s Book Award.
Teaching covers global catastrophe history, cartography, and geography. He maintains the digital archive 'radicalcartography.net'.
