Bill Hesterly is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy at the David Eccles School of Business, University of Utah. He holds the Dumke Family Presidential Chair in Strategic Management. His research focuses on value creation, strategic formulation, and organizational economics, with notable work on institutional settings and rent appropriation in knowledge-based industries like Major League Baseball. He has authored influential textbooks such as Strategic Management and Competitive Advantage and served on editorial boards of top journals including Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal.
Education: Ph.D. in Management from UCLA (1989).

- Strategic problem-solving methodologies
- Knowledge-based value creation theories
Awards: Recipient of the Western Academy of Management’s Ascendant Scholar Award (1999) and multiple teaching excellence recognitions. His work has been honored with the Academy of Management’s Best Paper Award (2000).
Service: Co-founder of the Utah-BYU Winter Strategy Conference and a founding member of the Strategic Human Capital Interest Group at the Strategic Management Society. Active in university governance, including roles on the Graduate Council and DEPARTMENT Executive Education Committee.
