About
Bilal Tanatar is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. He has held this position since November 1999 and previously served as Department Chairman from 2001 to 2006, currently sitting on the Faculty of Science governing board.
His academic journey began with a B.S. in Physics from Bogazici University (1982), followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware (1987) under Henry Glyde's supervision. Postdoctoral research included work with David Ceperley at the University of Illinois (quantum Monte Carlo simulations), Mahi Singh at the University of Western Ontario (low-dimensional semiconductors), and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste.
Tanatar's research centers on quantum many-body phenomena, with pioneering work in quantum Monte Carlo methods for electron gases and diagrammatic perturbation theory. His investigations span low-dimensional systems, Bose-Einstein condensation, and ultra-cold atomic gases, establishing him as a leading figure in computational condensed matter physics.
His major recognitions include:
- TUBITAK Young Scientist Award (1993)
- Turkish Physical Society Engin Arık Science Award (2008)
- Mustafa Parlar Foundation Science Award (2010)
- Election to Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA) (2001)
- Election to Science Academy - Turkey (2012)
As an educator, Tanatar mentored influential Turkish physicists during Bilkent University's formative years, with many advisees becoming academic leaders nationwide. His leadership extended through ICTP membership (Associate 1994-2002, Senior Associate 2002-2008) and departmental governance.
