Beyza Ural Marchand is a Professor of Economics and Director Undergraduate in the Department of Economics at the University of Alberta, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. She also serves as a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn). Her research focuses on development economics and international trade, with an emphasis on microeconomic impacts of trade, poverty, income distribution, child education, and energy access. She earned her PhD in Economics from Syracuse University and joined the University of Alberta in 2007.

Research Interests: Her work examines household welfare in trade policy, energy policy effects on poverty, and the microeconomic consequences of macroeconomic conditions. Key topics include the distributional impacts of trade liberalization, tariff pass-through mechanisms, and the role of electricity quality in rural development.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of SSHRC Insight Grants ($183k) and other research awards. Notable funding includes the SSHRC Connection Grant (2025-2026) and SSHRC Insight Grant (2021-2026).
Teaching & Advising: Teaches International Trade and supervises graduate students in development economics. Recent advisees include Samprita Chakraborty (PhD, 2022) and Himani Pande (PhD, 2021). Her research group explores global trade dynamics, labor markets, and poverty reduction strategies.
Labs/Teams: Leads research on trade and inequality within the Department of Economics and collaborates with IZA on labor market studies. Engaged in interdisciplinary projects through the University of Alberta’s Worldwide Universities Network (WUN).
