Beverly Kirk is the Director of Washington Programs and a Teaching Professor of Broadcast and Digital Journalism at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She joined in 2022 to expand the school’s Washington, D.C. programs across communications disciplines. Based in Washington, D.C., she is also part of the Syracuse University Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship.
Education:
- M.A. in Diplomacy and International Commerce, University of Kentucky
- B.A. in History and Broadcast Journalism (summa cum laude), Western Kentucky University
Research & Professional Experience:
- Over two decades in journalism, with roles at NBC, NPR, and PBS, focusing on domestic/international politics and government
- Founder of a media consulting firm specializing in curriculum design
- Non-resident Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) International Security Program
- Prior roles at CSIS include hosting the “Smart Women, Smart Power” podcast and leading multimedia initiatives
- Member of the University of Kentucky’s Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues advisory board
Leadership & Advocacy:
- Executive Director of JOURNEY to Lead (nonprofit women’s leadership initiative)
- Board member of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security
- Focus on empowering women in foreign policy, national security, and international development
