About
Betsey Brada is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Reed College, affiliated with the Division of History and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (2011) and previously taught at Princeton University's Program in Global Health and Health Policy. Her research focuses on medical anthropology, pedagogical expertise, and African ethnography, particularly examining global health frameworks and HIV/AIDS treatment in Botswana. She has received the 2013 Clark Taylor Paper Prize for her work on global health dynamics in Botswana's HIV programs.
Her current research includes a book manuscript analyzing how global health constructs moral and epistemic frameworks through U.S.-Botswana HIV partnerships, and a project on Botswana's first post-HIV medical school. Her work critiques unidirectional global health narratives, emphasizing reciprocal knowledge exchanges and ethical encounters.
Betsey's publications explore topics like pediatric HIV treatment rituals, humanitarian ethics in African clinics, and the biopolitics of HIV/AIDS in post-apartheid South Africa. She combines ethnographic research with historical analysis to address contemporary health challenges in Africa.
