About
Bethany Desroches, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University's College of Medicine. A Brooklyn native and newest core faculty member, she serves as Director of the Surgical Simulation Program and recently completed her Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. Desroches will join Drs. Winer and Sheilds at Kings County Hospital Center, bringing expertise in advanced surgical techniques and medical education leadership.
Her academic journey includes:
- Doctor of Medicine (2010-2014), SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, Brooklyn, NY
- M.Sc. in Artificial Organs, Biomaterials, and Cellular Technologies (2009), Brown University, Providence, RI
- B.S. in Biology, Honors (2004-2008), Brown University, Providence, RI
Dr. Desroches demonstrates exceptional commitment to medical education innovation through surgical simulation program leadership. Her clinical focus centers on robotic and minimally invasive urologic surgery, with research spanning robotic urinary reconstruction, bladder cancer surveillance, testosterone therapy protocols, and molecular mechanisms of ureteral obstruction. She actively contributes to advancing endourology through publications on surgical techniques and device innovations.
Analysis of her 2012-2025 publications reveals a strategic evolution from foundational work in cardiac tissue engineering and health disparities toward specialized urologic applications. Current research emphasizes robotic surgical innovation (single-port orchiectomy, partial nephrectomy), cost-effective endourology (single-use ureteroscopes), and clinical management of nocturia and testosterone therapy. Her work consistently bridges technical surgical advancement with practical clinical implementation.
As Director of Surgical Simulation, Dr. Desroches spearheads resident training program restructuring with focus on robotic proficiency development. Her leadership in simulation curriculum design represents significant institutional investment in next-generation surgical education, though specific grant details remain unreported in available materials.
She integrates seamlessly into SUNY Downstate's clinical ecosystem through collaboration with Drs. Winer and Sheilds at Kings County Hospital Center, strengthening the department's capacity for complex robotic procedures and resident mentorship within Brooklyn's diverse patient population.
