Bethany Cartwright

Bethany Cartwright is a Physician Scientist and Assistant Instructor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She is also the 2021 W.W. Caruth Fellow Scholar at Children’s Health. Her roles include clinical work on pediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes, research in adipose development, and advocacy against weight stigma.

Education:

• Bachelor’s in Molecular and Cellular Biology (with minors in Chemistry and English) from Vanderbilt University
• M.D. and Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology via UT Southwestern’s Medical Scientist Training Program
• Pediatric residency and Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship through UT Southwestern’s Physician Scientist Training Program

Research Focus: Investigates cellular heterogeneity in pediatric adipose tissue to understand childhood obesity’s unique biological mechanisms. Her work bridges basic science and clinical practice to address obesity-related health outcomes. She also advocates for compassionate care in larger-bodied pediatric patients.

Awards: Appointed as the 2021 W.W. Caruth Fellow Scholar, recognizing her promise in pediatric research and clinical innovation.

Key Affiliations: Medical consultant for Children’s Health’s Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Team, mentored by Drs. Philipp Scherer and Rana Gupta. Actively involved in medical education initiatives and anti-stigma advocacy.
