Berry Eggen is a Full Professor of Design for User Experience in Ambient Intelligent Systems at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where he heads the Future Everyday group and serves as director of research for the Industrial Design department. He concurrently holds an adjunct professorship at the University of Technology Sydney's School of Software. His expertise spans ubiquitous computing, multimodal interaction (including intelligent lighting and sound design), and seamless integration of smart systems into everyday life.
Eggen earned his MSc in Physics (1986) and PhD in Perception and Synthesis of Computer-Generated Speech (1989) from TU/e. After 14 years as Principal Scientist at Philips Research leading Ambient Intelligence and user interface research, he joined TU/e's faculty in 2003, serving as Vice Dean of Industrial Design until 2018. He currently leads the Dutch Creative Industries' Knowledge and Innovation Agenda roadmap team and chairs TU/e's EAISI Foundational research group.
His research focuses on creating human-centered interactive systems that harmonize with users' daily lives. Notable projects include designing digital concierge systems for Airbnb experiences and assistive music players for dementia care. Eggen's work bridges technological innovation with sociocultural considerations, emphasizing ethical design and societal impact.
