Prof. Bernhard Rieger is a Full Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), heading the WACKER Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry and directing the Institute of Silicon Chemistry. His roles include serving as Spokesperson of the TUM Senate (2016–2019) and initiating the German-Canadian graduate school IRTG2022 'ATUMS'.
Education: Studied Chemistry at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), completed a doctorate (summa cum laude, 1988), habilitation in Inorganic Chemistry (1995, University of Tübingen), and held professorships at Ulm University (1997–2006) prior to joining TUM in 2007.
Research focuses on Catalytic Precision Polymerization for responsive materials, CO₂ utilization in polymer synthesis, low-valent organosilicon compounds, and silicon nanocomposites for optoelectronics. His work bridges chemistry, physics, and nanoelectronics through interdisciplinary projects like the IRTG2022 program.
Notable awards include the Wöhler Prize (2013), Honorary Doctorate from University of Helsinki (2007), and membership in acatech, the European Academy of Science, and the Finnish Academy of Sciences.
Leadership roles: Directed SciTech GmbH (1998–2005), served on TUM Senate and University Council, and chairs the Dutch Polymer Institute's polyolefins technology area (2020–present). Retired as TUM faculty effective March 31, 2025.
