Bernd Fleischmann
Professor · Cardiovascular Biology
Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of BonnAbout
Prof. Bernd Fleischmann is the Head of the Institute of Physiology I at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bonn. His research focuses on cardiovascular physiology and regenerative medicine, particularly addressing mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction and regeneration post-myocardial infarction. His group combines molecular biology, stem cell models, and in vivo experimentation to explore approaches for mending damaged hearts through cell transplantation and cellular reprogramming.
Research interests include the mechanistic study of cardiovascular diseases using in vitro/in vivo models (e.g., hiPS cells), cardiac cell cycle regulation, and stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte therapies. Recent work highlights advancements in pulmonary hypertension treatment via Gq inhibition and insights into telomere dynamics during cardiomyocyte maturation.
Key collaborations involve the Life & Brain Center and Bonn Center of Neurosciences. His lab employs transgenic mouse models and embryonic stem cell systems to investigate cardiac regeneration strategies. Students under his guidance include Alexander Brückner, Esther Carls, and others.
